June is National Safety Month, and Fruit Growers Supply will be celebrating all month long.
“We’re going to have different events, luncheons, celebrations, and trainings all month long, and we’re offering 10% off all work safety boots at our retail centers,” says Jonathan Isonio, the Environmental Health and Safety Manager for both Fruit Growers and Sunkist.
Trainings will vary according to location. In the Central Valley, FGS will co-host a hands-on fire extinguisher training with Jorgensen Company. In central and southern California, where irrigation employees are likely to find themselves working long hours outdoors, training will focus on heat awareness instead. And throughout the month, various lunches will be held to commemorate the company’s dedication to safety.
“One of our stores is over 2,000 days safe, without an accident,” Isonio says. “We track our safety on a weekly basis and compare ourselves to other companies through the Better Business Bureau, and we’re in the top 25th percentile across the country. The number of accidents that we have, versus the sheer number of hours and employees we have… you want that number to be as low as possible, and ours is very low.”
Isonio credits the company’s employees with keeping things safe. “It’s not me,” he says. “It’s not the managers. It’s these employees looking out for each other and identifying potential issues, so we can address them before they become a problem. It’s great to see everybody working together and keeping that safety top-of-mind, especially in the month of June.”
Fruit Growers Supply would also like to thank our customers for using our equipment and services in a safe manner. That’s why we’re offering a 10% discount on safety boots at our ops centers, from June 1st through June 30th.
“We have composite toes, steel toes, and slip resistance boots,” Isonio says. “It’s a great discount for our customers. We carry a lot of other safety items, too, including first aid kits, safety vests, hearing protection, and cut-resistant gloves. We’re going to be pushing everything, because we want to make sure our customers are stocked up on whatever they need for a safe summer.”
Happy June, growers! Stay safe.
