A new avocado is hitting grocery store shelves this spring, and it’s grown right here in California. Say hello to the California Crema, a GEM variety avocado with gold-flecked skin and a creamy, nutty taste.
In season between April and July, California Cremas are the latest addition to California’s booming avocado industry. The state produces roughly 88% of America’s avocados, generating nearly $1.4 billion of business per year. Although national retailers still rely on imports from Mexico and other countries to meet year-round demand for avocados, newcomers like the California Cremas help boost domestic production and cut down on foreign commodities during peak season.
Developed by the University of California’s Grey E. Martin (and named after the researcher’s initials), GEM avocados are celebrated for their minimal environmental impact. They’re grown on compact trees and have a denser fruit set than other varieties, meaning a larger amount of GEMs can typically be produced within a smaller footprint. The California Cremas take these sustainable measures one step further by focusing on climate-friendly packaging, including recycled paper film, biodegradable cartons, and compostable PLU stickers and bagging.
